Mini Tummy Tuck
What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?
A mini tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a body contouring surgery that removes fat, repositions abdominal muscles and trims excess sagging skin. The goal of a mini tummy tuck is to flatten and tone the midsection, specifically in cases where exercise and diet have proved to be ineffective. A mini tummy tuck can be performed on the entire abdomen; however, for many, the area of concern is limited to the lower portion of the abdomen. These patients can benefit from a mini tummy tuck which focuses on the area below the hips. Dr. Jonathan D. Hall, a renowned Boston area plastic surgeon, regularly performs mini tummy tucks.
How is a Mini Tummy Tuck Performed?
To begin the procedure, a general anesthesia is administered. Dr. Hall will then make a horizontal incision just above the pelvic line. Once the incision has been made, Dr. Hall can sculpt and reposition the underlying muscle tissue and remove excess fat. To complete the procedure, Dr. Hall will trim any loose skin and carefully close the incisions with sutures to create a taut finish. Dressing is then applied and a compression garment put in place, which will help control post-procedure swelling. The procedure time will vary from patient to patient, but it typically takes 2-5 hours.
Recovery Period
Immediately after surgery, the lower abdomen may be swollen, bruised and stiff. Patients should plan to take a week off of work. To help curtail pain and alleviate discomfort, Dr. Hall will prescribe medication. The initial recovery period after a mini tummy tuck is about two weeks, although each patient is unique. Typically, patients return to their regular routines in 10-14 days, but are advised to avoid strenuous activity and exercise for 6-8 weeks.
Although it takes time to fully recover, the end result will be a slimmer and tighter lower abdomen. In addition, patients can expect an enduring outcome, provided they eat well, exercise regularly and avoid weight fluctuations.
Ideal Candidates for a Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck may be an option those who:
- Have localized fat concentrated below the navel
- Are in good health and have a consistent weight
- Want to address sagging skin or stubborn fat after a pregnancy
- Want to tighten the lower abdomen after losing a significant amount of weight
- Have realistic expectations
The procedure is not recommended for women who are considering a pregnancy or for those whose weight has not been stable for at least one year. A mini tummy tuck cannot address obesity and should not be considered a weight loss solution.
